Recycling and Proper Disposal of Fishing Line and Soft Plastics

As anglers, we understand the importance of preserving the health and beauty of our waterways. Proper disposal and recycling of fishing line and soft plastic baits help ensure a sustainable future for our sport and the ecosystems we rely on.

Why Recycling Matters

Discarded fishing line and soft plastics pose serious risks to wildlife and the environment. Birds, fish, and other animals can become entangled or ingest these materials, leading to injuries or fatalities. Protecting our waterways means protecting the creatures that call them home.

  • Fishing Line: Monofilament and braided lines take centuries to break down. If left in the environment, they can cause lasting harm to wildlife and habitats.

  • Soft Plastics: Fish and wildlife may mistake old baits for food, leading to health issues and disruptions in the food chain.

The "Don't Trash Nature" Program

We’re proud to lead the charge with our "Don’t Trash Nature" program. This initiative encourages anglers to clean up trash around waterways, sharing their efforts with the hashtags #DontTrashNature and #QwikCatch for a chance to win fishing-related prizes. Learn more and join the movement at Don't Trash Nature.

Recycling Made Easy

The Keep America Fishing “Pitch It” campaign began as a response to proposed legislation in Maine to ban non-biodegradable soft plastic lures. It has since evolved into a nationwide effort to prevent litter and promote responsible disposal practices. Visit Pledge to Pitch It to learn more.

  1. Fishing Line Recycling:

    • Utilize recycling bins at marinas and fishing retailers.

    • Alternatively, mail used line to programs like Berkley’s for proper recycling.

  2. Soft Plastic Bait Disposal:

    • Send old baits to participating recycling programs.

    • Choose reusable containers to reduce waste from single-use packaging.

    • Where recycling isn’t available, dispose of them in the trash rather than in the water.

  3. Prevent Littering:

    • Bring a trash bag on every fishing trip to collect and properly dispose of waste.

    • Join local clean-up efforts to make an even bigger impact.

Small Actions, Big Impact

Every angler can contribute to a healthier environment. By recycling fishing line and soft plastics, you’re not only protecting fish and wildlife but also ensuring future generations can enjoy the sport we love.
