Ned Rig
When & Where: Rocky river bottoms, ledges, gravel flats, and anywhere you're targeting smallmouth holding tight to the bottom. A natural fit any time fish are ignoring bigger profiles.
How: Thread straight on a Ned head so the bait stands upright. Let it settle on bottom, then use short drags and extended dead-sticks. Move it inches between pauses — hellgrammites don't swim, they scurry.
Why: The segmented, leggy profile is a near-perfect hellgrammite imitation at rest, and the willow cat scent adds a natural food signal that keeps fish committed longer.
Tuning: Go lighter heads in slower current for more sit time; bump up weight to stay pinned in faster seams.
Drop Shot
When & Where: Ledges, rock piles, bridge pilings, and clear-water situations where you want the bait hovering just off bottom in the strike zone.
How: Nose-hook it and keep the leader short — 6 to 10 inches off the weight. Shake in place or drag slowly along structure.
Why: The suspended presentation puts the hellgrammite silhouette right at eye level for fish holding on structure. Scent disperses naturally without any retrieve.
Standard (Ball) Jig Head
When & Where: River current breaks, rocky banks, and riprap where you want to tick bottom and crawl.
How: Keep the retrieve slow and bottom-focused — short hops with plenty of pause. Let the bait settle fully between moves.
Why: The segmented body and splayed legs give lifelike movement on the fall and at rest. The willow cat scent does extra work when the bait is sitting still.
Texas Rig
When & Where: Rocky wood tangles, shallow cover, and anywhere you need a weedless presentation near bottom structure.
How: Use a light-wire hook and minimal weight. Crawl it slowly and let it fall into gaps and crevices — dead-stick on the pause.
Why: Weedless rigging lets you work the bait through gnarly cover where real hellgrammites live, and the compact profile doesn't hang up as easily as larger creatures.
Neko Rig
When & Where: Hard bottom, sand/gravel transitions, and finesse situations on pressured water where a subtle stand-up action triggers neutral fish.
How: Insert a nail weight in the head end and nose-hook it through the body. Shake in place or drag slowly — the weighted nose keeps the bait angled up off bottom.
Why: The stand-up posture mimics a hellgrammite at rest or fleeing, and the legs quiver on even the lightest shake.
